What was once considered as disposable, vintage paperbacks with colorful stories and equally interesting cover art, are fun and collectible.

The paperback book as we know it can be traced back to New York in 1939. That year ten books were published by Pocket Books. Smaller, lighter, inexpensive, and easy to carry, paperback books became a huge success. Paperback publishers cashed in on a new, more mobile and modern society that liked to read on the bus, in subways, or on the beach. Soldiers during World War II were able to carry small paperbacks in their uniform pockets. Special “Armed Services Editions” were produced for free distribution to Servicemen.

The appeal of the paperback

The books had titles that appealed to everyday people. Sci-Fi, crime dramas, westerns, romance, sleaze, adventure, everything was available in a paperback for under a dollar. Titles such as Fleshpots of Malibu, Six-Gun Melody, The Planet Killers or Slice of Hell enticed millions to read them. Some well known authors became even more famous. Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, Mickey Spillane, Louis L’amour, and Edgar Rice Burroughs would release dozens of titles, and gain legions of fans in the process.

Judging a book by its cover

The cover art on paperback books is often more exciting than the content of the pages within. The illustrations depicted damsels in distress (often times scantly clad), six-guns blazing, or some other sort of a life-threatening situation. Vivid colors with action-packed scenes of what promised to be a thrilling read, grabbed shoppers attention when displayed for sale.

Why people collect paperbacks

People collect paperback books for different reasons. Some enjoy reading the stories, and collect their favorite authors, or collect certain genres such sci-fi or westerns. Others collect them for the cover art, and become fans of the different artists' work. The art work represents the era in which they were produced, and is a glimpse into the popular culture of the time.

Vintage paperbacks today

Finding vintage paperbacks today is relatively easy. Many can be sourced through ebay, and online vintage book sellers specializing in paperbacks. Used book stores sometimes have vintage paperbacks set aside on a special shelf. The real fun, as it is with all collectibles, is the thrill of the hunt. Books call still be found at garage sales, thrift stores, and even your aunt"s attic.

The value of books reflects the quality of the item. Near mint, or extra clean examples combined with the right title or art work can fetch hundreds of dollars. Most books are not mint, but still look nice, and are affordable. Most sell between one to ten dollars a piece. A lot of enjoyment for the money.
